Better Than Me

"I'm always here,"
So I've heard you say,
Did you even notice my fear?
Or were you too busy questioning, "what was wrong with her"?
Better than me,
Maybe she will be.
I am a museum full of art,
But you had your eyes shut,
Questioning if I was good enough.
Better,
yes, maybe she will be,
Do you understand the pressure that puts on me?
You think you can define me,
That I'm a tick in just one box,
Like my being is a door,
That a single key unlocks.

I wish that I could hold your heart,
Cradle it gently in my hands,
But my arms are not strong enough
To hold what I don't understand.
Better than me,
Maybe she will be,
What is it that you see?
I like to hug but not shake hands,
I like greeting card cliches,
Not fancy clothes or hair bands.
Better than me,
Maybe she will be.
If you listened, you'd know,
The thought of being compared to someone else,
The thought of no one listening when I call,
That's what I like least of all.
